Come one, come all, to the Miami Winter Music Conference! Alright, well not all of you. OK, probably none of you. Unless you happen to be in Miami on March 24th, I don’t think anyone here in the PNW is going to make it to that one. In addition to a whole host of events aimed at the EDM industry taste-makers, the Winter Music Conference is the home of the International Dance Music Awards. The IDMAs are a bit like the Grammy’s of EDM – wait, what? Apparently EDM is now at the Grammys. OK, but the IDMAs are surprisingly thorough, awarding everything from “Best North American DJ” to “Best Headphones” and “Best Music App”. And even if you don’t agree with the nominees for each category, they do certainly help to paint a picture of where EDM is at for any given year.
As it is probably important to keep in mind, most major awards events are based on industry rankings and overall popularity, so don’t expect them to be a barometer of the best talent in the world. In fact, we already pretty loudly voiced our opinions on the DJ Mag Top 100, which has a lot of crossover with the IDMAs. Keeping that in mind, let’s take a look at the category for Best Global DJ: Armin van Buuren, Calvin Harris, Carl Cox, David Guetta, Hardwell, Martin Garrix, Skrillex, and Tiësto. To keep it positive, let’s just say we sure would love to see Carl Cox take that one home!
If you want to have a say in IDMAs, you can cast your vote here. And just for a second, let’s go back in time to the year 2000; a year where Livin’ La Vida Loca, Eifel 65’s Blue, TLC’s Scrubs and Basement Jaxx all won awards. Back in the good ol’ days, amiright?
What do you think of the IDMAs? What artists would you want to see win?
