Canada loves you! You’ve been coming to check Canada out for a number of years now, and we clearly can’t get enough. What are some of your favourite venues to play up here?
K: I love Canada! Round venue in Toronto popped, and Hifi bar in Calgary has a great almost house party vibe about it. The Imperial in Vancouver has been great for The Shambhala after partys with Westwood recordings / The Funk Hunters. Also some of the smaller towns like Nanaimo, Victoria, Banff, Nelson have really energetic crowds.
And the US! Branching markets is always tough but how about those US shows? Any really getting you stoked?
K: I’m so excited to finally hit the states! We have a lot of great shows in the works, but still waiting to release the full tour details. I’m excited for them all, first time shows in a new spot are always the best!
You’re playing Oregon Eclipse, a once in a lifetime engagement—a festival taking place in the middle of the largest solar eclipse in a long time—that’s gotta be an honour. How do you feel about playing such a massive undertaking?
K: Such an honor to play eclipse! I don’t know what to expect, but I’m sure it will be amazing. It seems like the place to be this year and a plethora of friends are on that line up, good times guaranteed.
Your Yum Yum tour blew through some pretty impressive dates in a short time. What stood out for you?
K: I loved the vibe of the Vancouver show. Rhythm n Alps in Wanaka [New Zealand] was special; insane stage design and always cool to rock a hometown crowd. There was a little show in Blue Door – Arrowtown [NZ], which was way over packed and the sound system we rolled in barely fit in the venue. The sound was phat! We shook the mortar off the bricks, and it just felt like a really special gig; it was the biggest night the venue had seen!
What’s next for K+Lab? What do you have in the pipe that you can share with us?
K: I’m wrapping up the Yum Yum tour, then hitting the studio hard for a month with collabs lined up with Lyrics Born, The Funk Hunters, Melodownz, Beat Fatigue plus a few more solo effort —all coming soon. I also have a release with a brand new label called Delicious Music, which I’ll be involved with and doing the artwork for; we’re excited to see what the label can do!
2017 has already been so action packed, what do you hope to accomplish in the second half of the year, and beyond?
K: I want to push my live show to a new level! I’ve been talking with Defunk about collabing on some live shows, so we will see where that goes. Hoping to make some live performance videos and get another EP out, between that and touring I think things should be nice and busy!
And finally, something fun. What is the funniest tour story you have for us (within reason!)
K: I’ve got so many “I left my passport” story’s their not even funny anymore, especially for my agent—sorry Tomas. I got stuck in a tree at Shambhala with my girl. We were inside a blow up flamingo, then walked through a few trees, fell over, and got stuck upside down with our legs poking out of the flamingo. Some walkers by had to control their laughter and help get us out, fun times!
