Beyond Heaven: Chicago House Party Flyers From 1983-1989 has released this October, providing a thrilling iconographic history of the early Chicago house scene. The posters included in the book display a wide range of designs, and encapsulate a variety of performances. Those who were part of the Chicago house scene in the ’80s will certainly feel nostalgia as they flip through the pages of nostalgic posters. For those of us who were never there, they paint a vivid picture of the scene, allowing us to peer into a past that we were never able to experience.
But this book also leaves us wondering – what would this kind of book look like for Seattle’s dance music scene? While our city doesn’t evoke the same kind of status or historical import that Chicago and Detroit do, what could a visual history tell us about our own background? We might be waiting a while – or forever – for such a project to emerge, but pondering the possibility is exciting enough for us.
