Breaking free from the death grip that my DJ controller seems to have on me is a task in itself. Even when I do it still feels like I’m connected in some form or another. What was once a simple car to work or to get groceries. Is now a constant fight with myself to not pull out my phone and start mixing notes into my notes app. Even laying in bed trying to sleep I often think of tracks I’d like to mix. This eventually cascades into a full on 30 song list, keeping me up past my bedtime. At shows I catch myself paying much closer attention to the DJ and periodically having “OH…thats what he’s doing” moment. I’ve become a more critical listener and notice things like highs, or low,s being faded in or out.
Connecting with Music
The past 6 months have been a learning experience to say the least. While I originally didn’t expect owning a DJ controller to become such an investment, the satisfaction it’s given me in return is priceless. I originally just picked it up with the intention to make my own mixes and mash up songs here or there. Instead, my entire daily routine has been altered thanks to this little piece of musical wonderfulness. I’m constantly hunting down new music, and constantly jot down mixing notes in my notepad. However demanding this purchase may seem to an outsider, I’ve never been more in touch with music.
Purchasing a DJ controller has been one of the best things I’ve done to better appreciate music. The experience for myself has been nothing short of positive and enjoyable. Along with all the skills I’ve developed, I’ve grown to love music far more than I thought I could. I’ve been purchasing more music and have encouraged my friends to do the same. Seeing a DJ as more than a glorified button pusher has all-together changed my outlook on shows. While I knew there was more going on than just a few button pushes and knob twists, putting myself up to creating my own mixes has shone light on how exhausting it really can be.
