Get To Know A Genre: Trance

The increasing trend towards compact musical production meant the number of music producers sky rocketed during this time. We don’t want to discredit this period in trance as there were many, MANY great tracks were released during this time. We’re just saying there isn’t as much to talk about, as the “scene” was relatively stagnant. In fact here are a few tracks by Cosmic Gate (2002), John O’Callaghan (2007), and Tritonal (2008)  to prove our love of this time in trance.

Cosmic Gate – Back to Earth

John O’Callaghan feat. Audrey Gallagher – Big Sky

Tritonal – Jump Off

Our Top 20 picks for this period in Trance: Above & Beyond/Oceanlab, Aly & Fila, Armin van Buuren, Cosmic Gate, David Forbes, Ferry Corsten, Genix, Heatbeat, Kaskade, John O’Callaghan, Lange, Markus Schulz, Max Graham, Matt Darey, Motorcycle (early work of Gabriel & Dresden with JES) Menno de Jong, Sander van Doorn, Suncatcher, Super 8 (& Tab), and Tritonal.

Hope is restored for the trance family! Over the past few years, trance has been steadily making its return both as a standalone genre, and uniquely blending with other popular forms of dance music. Deep house blends with trance to give us a refreshed progressive sound, widely exemplified by the Anjunadeep and Silk Royal labels. Matt Lange is a particular standout for us. Mark Sherry, Will Atkinson, and Bryan Kearny amongst others have started to revive that hard hitting trance, by incorporating techno elements and giving us tech trance with several fantastic releases on Damaged and Subculture. Even Armin Van Buuren has jumped back onto the 138 bus with his creation of the Who’s Afraid of 138!? label. And there is no question that dubstep has influenced the genre – take a look at Seven Lions for his unique brand of trance step. All in all, we think trance is taking some new steps while remembering its roots. The future looks to be bright!

Will Atkinson – Deep Impact

Seven Lions with Myon & Shane 54 feat. Tove Lo – Strangers

Matt Lange – Staccato

Our Top 20: Above & Beyond, Andrew Bayer, Andrew Rayel, Adam Ellis, Beat Service, BT Dash Berlin, Eximinds, Giuseppe Ottaviani, Ian Standerwick, Ilan Bluestone, Johan Eckman, Mark Sixma, Mark Sherry, Markus Schulz, Myon & Shane 54, N2O/Nitrous Oxide, Sean Tyas, Will Atkinson, and XGenic.

Josh fell in love with Trance at USC's Resolution 2012. It's all been downhill from there as the obsession has grown to a full time hobby in seeking out interesting music across the dance music spectrum and attending crazy parties across the globe.
