The in-vogue opinion to be held about Tiesto is that “he should make trance again.” As he’s gotten older, his style has evolved with the scene, eventually making him into the straight-up progressive house DJ he is today. It’s the kind of the music that’s most popular in the mainstream, and generally is what we’ve come to expect from all his releases. All that being so, his latest release throws a big fat wrench in any preconceptions we may have held.
With deep, deliberate kicks, a slow build, and no drop to be found, Tiesto’s bootleg rework of Coldplay’s Midnight is a gigantic departure from anything he’s come out with in the last 2-3 years. In a scene that’s become inundated with enormous, arena-scale music, it’s refreshing to see an artist with as much wide appeal as Tiesto take things in a decidedly minimal direction.
