The Best Of What The Festival [Editorial Review]

Dear Rob Garza (and What the Festival),
Why, oh why was your set from 2am-4am?  Normally, I can kick it until the wee hours.  But by Saturday night the tiredness was already starting to settle in and I could barely last 15 minutes into the set.  I heard Garza put on an incredible show, but I wished he could have played from 12am-2am instead of 2am-4am.

What the Fest saved the best for last.  I partied hard at the Thomas Jack Tropical Pool Party — which is really what I came for most, and went strong until the end of the night.  I bounced back and forth between the last headliners, easily crossing the field from the Main and Effin’ stages so that I could see Slow Magic and Odesza but also Eats Everything and Justin Martin.

On Monday at noon, we packed and drove home.  It was a great weekend.  I loved the chill vibes, the interactive art installations, the wild pool party, and the coziness of the Shinto A Go Go stage.  I can see how people look forward to going to this festival year after year.  The attendees were friendly and positive.  At roughly 4,000 people, it was the perfect size.  It’s no Burning Man, but that’s ok.  It should never try to be Burning Man.  Is it the Millennial Generation’s Woodstock?  Probably not either.   It’s What the Festival.  And that’s exactly what it should be.

First gig in the music industry was as a low power FM broadcast radio DJ in 1996. First concert was Blink 182 with Bush and Filter in 1999. First electronic show was Benny Bennasi in June 2011. We've come a long way, baby.
