SubDocta on his creative process: ‘My sound is evolving naturally on its own’

DMNW had the chance to sit down with one of our favorite artists, SubDocta, who continues his rise towards veteran and OG status in the bass community, and recently packed out the house at Neumos in Seattle on April 20.

Check out our full interview below!

DMNW: We first saw you last year on your Strictly Business tour that was also at Neumos. What is your favorite venue to play in the PNW (besides the Gorge)? Or favorite venue from around the USA/world?

SubDocta: Probably the Aragon ballroom in Chicago. It’s designed to look like a small city and the ceiling is all painted like a starry night. It’s a very cool and different experience playing there.

DMNW: You just released your Bass Science EP, which slaps hard! On your Soundcloud that recently you have posted a few drum’n’bass tracks. Is that a direction that you’re hoping to pursue more?

SubDocta: It is; I’ve always been a fan of it, but it took me a long time to develop the skills to produce it confidently. Definitely be on the lookout for more dnb in the future!

DMNW: Do you have anything else in the works, future collabs, plans for your set at Beyond Wonderland?

SubDocta: I have a few collabs in the works and also some special surprises for some of my upcoming live shows but unfortunately I can’t spill the beans on any of it just yet. You’ll have to wait and see ?

DMNW: How do you stay up to date with the latest music trends, adapt to changing and growing audiences? And how would you describe your overall sound, and do you feel it is evolving or influenced as EDM grows and develops?

SubDocta: To be honest, I don’t lol. There’s a lot of cool sounds coming out right now but I don’t care to try to follow them or try to recreate them. To me, that’s not a genuine way of going about the creative process. I think my sound is evolving naturally on its own and I’m enjoying where its going!

DMNW: Touring seems like it is fun to travel the whole country, but I imagine that there are times where it is stressful. What is the best part and hardest part about being on tour, or maybe from this tour?

SubDocta: The good part about touring is playing the actual shows. The rest I wouldn’t consider “fun” honestly. It’s hard work. You’re gone from home for extended periods of time, you’re in a different hotel every day, you’re flying or driving all day. It’s rough, but the shows and smiling faces make it all worth it in the end.

DMNW: Now that the tour is over, what is your favorite way to relax and unwind?

SubDocta: Being outside on my bike or with my dog. I look forward to that more than anything after a long tour run. Also, being able to binge the odd video game or two.

DMNW: As sports fanatics, we are curious if you play or watch any sports, and do you follow any sports team closely?

SubDocta: I’m a big baseball nerd and football fan. San Francisco teams all day!

DMNW: Best piece of life advice you have ever received or given out? Any message that you want to share with your fans?

SubDocta: Never trust a DJ that doesn’t dance!
