Seattle’s Supernova aims to be ‘anti-nightclub nightclub’ (DMNW Interview)

Emerging out of a global pandemic and launching a new and completely unique nightclub might seem daunting, but Seattle music entrepreneur Zac Levine has tapped into a space that the city has been aching for with Supernova.

Levine has been the creative force behind Seattle’s popular “Stayin’ Alive” night for years now, and will soon take the disco-themed event — and plenty of others — with him to a new home. In what used to be known as Studio Seven, Supernova is an immersive space reminiscent of a trip into Alice’s Wonderland, and will soon celebrate its grand opening on Friday, July 2.

Zac took the time to chat with DMNW recently about the space and overall mood leading into this weekend. Here’s what he had to say:

With Supernova opening its doors, what is the overall vibe your club and the mood you are looking to encourage patrons to get into when attending an event in your space?

Zac: Supernova is an immersive engaging arts and entertainment venue! We are focused on providing patrons with otherworldly uninhibited escapism for 4-8 hrs where they can forget about the troubles of daily life and focus on freedom of self expression.

What is your history in entertainment, can you give us some insight into your own journey and how have you brought that experience to the table with Supernova?

I have worked in the entertainment industry since 14. I began handing out flyers to events and worked my way up learning every aspect and position of venues and nightclubs. I feel like over the past 15 years I got my doctorate in Nightlife and Supernova is my dissertation. Taking everything I learned from my mentors Sean Majors, Steven Severin, and Meli Darby and all my career experiences, applying them to this project, I know I can’t fail! I AM READY!

How long did it take to finalize the original plans and vision for the club? Did you initially always want to take the club in the direction it ended up as or can you give us some insights into your creative process and what you focused on most when creating a new space?

I have been creating the vision of Supernova in my head for the past 5 years. I traveled to Tokyo, NYC, LA, Montreal and Santa Fe to find inspiration. I wanted to find what I loved about nightlife experiences that wasn’t offered in Seattle. And then apply those ideas to my venue concept with my own unique twist. I wanted to create something that is truly for the customer. The anti nightclub nightclub. With an extreme focus on art and customer experiences that wasn’t offered in Seattle. What genres of EDM or other music genres will be part of Supernova’s focus?

Supernova is starting on Fridays with Chicago/Detroit House, Funky House, Gospel House and on Saturdays with the past, present and future of Disco and NuDisco! We will expand in the future!

Will Supernova be opening at full capacity for the opening and do you have any special themed events coming up during that summer that patrons can look forward to on the calendar?

As of June 30th WA State will be opening up 100% with no restrictions. Unless otherwise informed by the state, Supernova will be opening at 100% capacity with no requirement for masks or proof of vaccination. Keep an eye on our Instagram @SupernovaSeattle for extremely exciting announcements as we launch our inaugural year!

We all know that Seattle is aching to hear live music again and can’t wait to get back into the swing of things and enjoy the music we love the most together, where do you see Supernova fitting into this and what are you excited to bring to the scene as a whole?

Supernova aims to be a beacon of light to those who are eager to engage in sweaty dance floor antics! We cant wait to open our doors to artists and patrons alike. We are extremely excited to bring a fresh canvas to the Seattle art scene.

If you could describe Supernova’s overall aesthetic in three words, what would they be?

Immersive, Engaging, Atmospheric.

The club’s opening weekend kicks off with a “Thank God It’s Friday” celebration on July 2, featuring funky house, Chicago house, vocal house, and gospel DJs, alongside circus performers and entertainers. Then on Saturday, Stayin’ Alive makes its Supernova debut with all the disco and nu-disco tunes you can handle. The weekend will be capped off on Sunday with the BeautyBoiz Revival, billed as “an inclusive house music dance party experience with a rotating cast of Go-go’s, drag queens, and dancers.”

Cover will be charged at the door for each event.

We can’t wait to watch Supernova step into new territory and show Seattle a venue that takes you on a journey you won’t soon forget. For more information on the venue, you can check out its website here.
