When last we heard from Salvador G, he was channeling the spirit of Girl Talk with MF Rex to bring us the self-titled Dead Pop Stars Society album. The seamless, smooth mashup talents of Salvador are once again on display, as he brings together two eras of music. Smokey Robinson & The Miracles combine with Too Short & Lil Jon, as Mickey’s Monkey and Shake That Monkey collide headfirst.
Beginning with the vocals of Smokey Robinson, it proceeds to crash straight into Lil Jon and Too Short’s verses, creating a hard-hitting mashup fit for any dance floor. Backup vocals from Mickey’s Monkey harken back to the soulful doo-wop days of the 60s, woven skillfully into the framework of a classic chart-topper from the early 00s. The end result: A clash of eras that curiously works on so many levels.
The stylings of Dead Pop Stars Society along with Salvador’s involvement with Automatic Reaction (“New York City’s most notorious DJ posse”), are proof positive that the age of the mashup is far from finished.
