Is this The Inevitable End for Norwegian electronic-duo Röyksopp? As their the upcoming album title suggests, Röyksopp will be releasing their last full-length album in November. Since 1998, the duo has became a pillar for not only the dance music scene, but for all electronic music. They have experimented with sounds ranging from the downtempo elevator-music style of Remind Me (which even found its way into a Geico commercial and DMNW’s Snowboarding playlist), to the epic orchestral masterpiece that is Röyksopp Forever. In Röyksopp’s latest release from The Inevitable End, the group partners up with the ultra-sexy vocalist Robyn for Monument (The Inevitable End Version).
Back in May, Röyksopp and Robyn released the original version of Monument, which was beautiful, extraordinarily chill and featured some nice dark, deep house chords. Luckily for us, Monument was reworked for The Inevitable End and the result is extravagant. This is a much darker sound than we are used to hearing from Röyksopp’s generally warm and happy vibe. The intense, techno-sounding bassline meshes perfectly with the melodic stabs and Robyn’s lyrics to pull this song together. This is a more uptempo, dance-inducing version than the original. However, Röyksopp does not speed up the tempo too much and thus enables the proper spacing that truly pronounces all of the intricate notes of the song. The duo’s send off is bittersweet, as we are in store for what is sure to be a brilliant album. It is just a shame that we will not be able to hear more beyond November’s release of The Inevitable End.
