I wondered when I’d be comfortable enough to let these go. Well, we’re finally here, and I’m so happy to say that this music will no longer just be mine, but ours to share.
– Robotaki
Preston Anthony Chin, aka Robotaki, gained a strong fan base after the release of his first EP, Science, back in 2018. His following tour reached Seattle from Chin’s home base in Montreal, Quebec. 2019 brought a second EP, Anachronism, and a performance at Double Major in Bellingham, Washington. This week, Robotaki finally released his debut LP, The Grand Mirage, via ODESZA’s label, Foreign Family Collective.
With diverse instrumentation, successful vocal collaborations, and a driving vision, Robotaki’s The Grand Mirage proves worthwhile listen for fans and new listeners alike. One standout track, Now That We’ve Been In Love, gained attention from Billboard when it was released as a single proceeding the album. Robotaki tells Billboard, “I wanted this record to feel like thinking of a golden memory from your past when you put it on, and let that concept influence all of my decisions when producing this.”
That laser sharp focus helped maintain a consistent voice throughout the 12 tracks included on the album. Feel-good dance tunes like Dreamcatcher smoothly transition to vulnerable ballads like Passing of Time. Attentive mastering, gentle beats, and rhythmic complexity tie each song together. Altogether, the music unfolds like a sun break on a rainy day.
Robotaki’s current tour includes a visit to Seattle’s The Crocodile on May 8th. With a “stay home” policy in effect for the duration of April, the performance may or may not happen. Either way, if you loved The Grand Mirage, be sure to show Robotaki your support. Streams and album sales help artists continue to thrive in these uncertain times!
