Gramatik has made a career of using stirring instrumentals and heavy bass to accompany his appreciation for every age of music from jazz to funk. And while his side project Exmag carries similar elements, it still manages to fall into a category all its own. With twangy electric guitar and steamy vocal accompaniment that would make Marvin Gaye proud, their first single “Tilt Mode,” is the very definition of baby-making music.
Just in case the innuendo of a song called “Tilt Mode” is lost on anyone, the first verse jumps right into the central thesis.
i’ve been gone for a long time,
and a man has needs.
What can you give me in the meantime,
in-between these sheets.
Well, if you’re looking for a man, understand that it is what it is;
I would never leave my girl back home,
but I cannot live without this.
If this is any indicator of what’s to come from Exmag, consider us on board. With a mission statement describing them as “five Brooklyn-based producers summoned by seven mysterious babes from outer space,” how could you not be?
