Some say that awards show nominations will go to your head, but in this case it did just the opposite. Derek Vincent Smith aka Pretty Lights was recently nominated for the “Best Dance/Electronica Album” 2014 Grammy. In light of this, Smith posted 16 original tracks, 16 remixes and 17 videos from and related to the nominated album A Color Map Of The Sun on the notorious file sharing site, BitTorrent. Until this year, Smith had never released a commercial album, so his decision was not abnormal.
Pretty Lights has used the music sharing and listening culture of his fans to develop a global following. Making money has never been Smith’s objective, who chose to stay independent instead of signing with a label. We think it’s important that artists like this continue to thrive in an industry that revolves around money. Money does not equal talent. A creative mind, passion, commitment and sharing do. So get to downloading if you don’t already own this visually appealing and vibrant progressive album.
