American global information and measurement company, Nielsen Entertainment, has released a study breaking down the demographics of EDM fans. As always, these studies are unable to account for every dance music fan and their specific interests, but there are still many interesting takeaways from the release.
Nielsen looked at information regarding streaming and sales data that they collected, and excluded pop crossovers and bigger hits in order to reflect the ‘core EDM fan‘. The data was then broken down by gender, ethnicity, education, and household income. According to the study, the most common EDM fan you’ll find is an 18-24 year-old white male, who has some college schooling and has a household income of $25,000 – $49,000 per year. Meanwhile, if you happen upon a 50-year-old American Indian female, with post-graduate schooling experience and making $150,000+ per year jamming to some Skrillex or Flux Pavilion, make a mental note, as that’s one of the rarest types of EDM fan around.
