We are getting used to the idea of being able to stream festivals from all over the world via the internet. Even Ustream aired Burning Man last year. But now there is a new player in the game. UG Strategies is announcing the first global TV network called Uphoric TV and is promising to give users a new perspective on what goes on at festivals. Besides offering the generic live stream of festivals from around the globe, they are also planning on offering original TV shows focused on the festival culture. There will be backstage access to some of the worlds biggest festivals, as well as documentaries on musicians, performers, promoters and festival hands. They want to also take us on the road, focused on the touring life.
Uphoric TV is going to be primarily based online for the initial stages and will be branching out to global television networks with its original content. Initially they plan on having it be completely free to users, with the plan of having premium memberships later on. It might look similar to Hulu.com at the beginning, but once the revenue starts to roll in, there may be a more permanent place on actual TV. There are also plans for a mobile app.
“UGS has been working closely with festivals around the world for over a decade, and has heard the demands of fans to have a platform that allows them to experience festivals, and the endless content that comes from them, at any given moment” ~ Parag Bhandari, of UG Strategies
The real question is, is this something that you would be interested in having as a consumer? Does it hold the hope in bringing the festival culture to the masses or will it be exploited like what MTV has done with pretty much everything (rememeber the “True Life” molly episode, anyone)?
