The living dance legend Missy Elliot has finally returned with a vengeance with her newly-released single WTF (Where They From) featuring Pharrell Williams. Missy Elliott first hinted at a comeback when she joined Katy Perry on stage during this year’s Superbowl half time show, much to the delight of her fans and to the confusion of many teens who had no idea who she was. A few weeks later she announced a new record deal for her forthcoming LP, collaborating once again with Timbaland, the producer that helped launch Missy’s career over a decade ago.
Within hours of the video release on YouTube, the booty-shaking rap manic had already amassed more than 2 million views. Directed by Missy Elliott and Dave Meyers, the video brings out classic Missy style with creative edges. She emulates a disco ball, reveals eye-catching dance moves and cruises around on a Hoverboard Segway. Pharrell Williams makes a cameo as a puppet while having a coordinated dance off with Missy and backup dancers.
With her last album debuting 10 years ago and her last single three, a return from Missy Elliott has been long overdue. As a pioneer of dance hip-hop, her music has influenced dance music as we know it today.
