Back in the olden days of the early 2000s, electronic music producers would communicate largely on what Nana and Pop-Pop call “forums.” Facebook wasn’t quite Facebook yet, and believe it or not people didn’t post a picture of everything they ate on social media. Yes, in that simpler time people used to communicate about common interests on such forums. Mat Zo, one of our favorite outspoken DJs, has partnered up with Ninth Parallel to create a forum for producers where they can get together in an online community and foster each other’s growth. It’s aptly called The Producer’s Forum.
On the forum you’ll see plenty of enjoyable usernames, as well as some familiar names of artists, record labels, and industry contacts. Obviously Mat Zo will be an active member of the community, but you can also find artists like Xilent, Volant, Bolier, The Living Tombstone, and more. There’s also a ranking system for users based on how many posts they’ve made, and in true producer form they’re based on the frequency range. You start out at Sub Bass, work your way up to Low Mids, High Mids, Highs, and hopefully one day make it to Ultrasonic!
One interesting thing about this forum is that there is no “general discussion” but that’s to keep it focused on production and producers. Thus far the Production Talk section contains five sub-sections: Mixing/Mastering, Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear, Composition/Arrangement/Theory, Sound Design, Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation. There’s also a section for Sharing & Feedback where you can post your finished tacks, works in progress, or suggest music that other users might like.
Basically this is one big hub without the distractions of your every day social media platform where the focus is strictly on producers, the tools they use, and the tracks that they create. There’s no pictures of happy hour or your friend’s kids, it’s 100% about the music, and we’re so down with that. We can’t wait to see what happens with this forum, whether it will be the next big community for producers or if it may as well be dust in the wind. We’re hoping for the former.
What do you think? Are forums dead? Or does Mat Zo have a chance at resurrecting them with this particular idea?
