[divider]THE BAD[/divider]
We couldn’t help but observe that the crowd at just about every stage we went to (excluding the late evening Electronic shows!) did not seem very reactive or excited about anything at all. People weren’t necessarily sucked into their smartphones, but they also weren’t really dancing much. There was a lot of standing and sitting with very little swaying to the music. There was also a lack of reaction to some of the more abrasive things said by musicians. For example, Twin Shadow, performing at the Fischer Green stage, made a comment to the crowd about how he had been wanting to see the Space Needle since he was a kid, but when he finally did see it, he was disappointed.
“[The Space Needle] is not as big as I was expecting it to be. Can you guys make it bigger?” -Twin Shadow
It didn’t come across as funny. It seemed sarcastic and possibly offensive. But no one laughed. No one booed. No one even really reacted at all. That was just one example of things that made us wonder if people were really listening.
Maybe Bumbershoot attendees were not very impressed by the music; perhaps that’s why they weren’t more enthusiastic. We’re not sure, but the crowd was noticably muted.
