How to Get the Look

We had the opportunity to delve further into Sara’s style. She provides us with tips and tricks to getting her look, while not breaking your budget. From Nars and Too Faced, to Wet and Wild, Ben Nye, and Madeline, Sara uses multiple different brands from luxury to more affordable. She shared that some affordable body paints with opaque color are Snazaroo Cake Paints, which are available at the local craft store. Sara also loves NYX, stating that their black and white liquid matte liners are her favorites, and under $10.

Several of the looks that Sara creates are highly detailed and intricate. She describes that her look takes up to one and a half to three hours depending on either the style or the amount of face and body covered.

“Some tips I would recommend is to take your time, and don’t get frustrated. Any mistake can be fixed! You can always use photos for inspiration if you don’t have creative mind. Pages like mine and many other artists can be good references to use when trying to re-create a look yourself. Also, invest in brushes! Your tools tend to be one of the most important parts of the process! I would recommend online brands like Sigma and Morphe for brushes.”

Now, to fully encompass the festival style, we’ve provided a video lapse of one of her previous Nightmare Before Christmas inspired looks, along with additional tips and tricks.

[well] “1. Before I go in with any paint, I lightly sketch my design using a white eyeliner pencil; this one is from NYX cosmetics.

2. Then, I do a smoky eye on the Sally side, using the same jumbo pencil in milk for a base, and tape as an outer edge stencil.

3. I use blue and grey shades from Wet and Wild and Morphe brushes. The eyelashes are Vegas Nay lashes by Eyelure.

4. I use all Snazaroo Face Paints to paint the side, and shade with various powder products. All the body paints I use are Snazaroo Cake Paints, which are water activated body paints that I get wet with a spray bottle. The more water you add, the more transfer transparent the paint becomes

5. The entire Jack Skeleton side is done in cake paints and NYX black liner. I use the powder products in dark shades to create depth on the outer edges of the patches and stitching.

6. I use a variety of brushes from Morphe and Elf, to It Cosmetics or even craft store paint brushes.

7. Everything is set using a translucent powder by Ben Nye after the paint dries.

8. To make the white and black lines pop, as a result for more precise points around the eyes and stitches, I use NYX liquid black liner and a jumbo eye pencil in milk.

9. To provide the shading and depth on the dried body paint, I use a variety of different eye shadows from multiple pallets. From drugstore to high end.

This look was painted on my model and friend, Skylar.” [/well]

All in all, Sara Koethe has a vast diversity of characters, themes, and styles when creating a makeup design.
