DMNW salutes: Local legends that shaped the Pacific Northwest EDM scene

As for women in EDM, underrepresentation continues to plague the culture, but a few women are working to change that. The Ukrainian-born, Vancouver-based, openly queer, gritty as all hell, bass queen know to fans as “Space Mom” also goes by the stage name Rezz. Her most recent collaboration with Grabbitz epitomizes the drool-inducing, rock meets heavy bass so loved by PNW fans.

Kendoll, the now LA-based producer, began DJing Seattle clubs at just 16 years old. Since disco culture barely reached the PNW, we certainly lack a fully developed home-grown house/techno scene. Kendoll’s quick rise to success might just serve to inspire a new generation of house artists. Together, these women serve as much needed inspiration for up-and-coming women in EDM.

The future of the Pacific Northwest EDM scene

With a healthy mix of broadly accessible, popular dance music and mind-bending experimental music, the Pacific Northwest EDM scene promises to stay relevant for decades to come.

2020 brought challenges unlike any other year for the local music scene. The global pandemic forced sweeping cancellations of concerts and festivals, forcing venues to close their doors and artists to experiment with live streaming capabilities. Increasing civil unrest in response to incidents of overt racism and police violence forced the music industry to reckon with misrepresentation, under recognition, and a lack of understanding towards black artists.

Amidst these challenges, the local EDM community has found strength in one another, proving their grit, character, and resilience. Private venues have abandoned typically competitive relationships to band together and fight for public funding. DJs and producers have turned live streams into fundraising efforts for venues and local Black Lives Matter organizations. Publications and social media platforms have turned their attention towards social activism.

One thing that the history of the Pacific Northwest EDM scene shouts loud and clear is the prolific and lasting influence of black musicians. From Jimi Hendrix to Sir Mix-A-Lot, our music scene owes its success to innovative game changers who overcame segregation and racism in their communities to eke out creative careers.

The local music scene has faced challenges in the past, and will face new challenges in the future. One thing remains certain: If and when a new genre comes to dominate, the lasting impact of electronic dance music will continue to define and influence future generations of local music.
