In Seattle, we are very lucky to have such a talented musical community right at our fingertips. We have a multitude of shows that we can attend on a daily basis at various venues, and recently we have seen a huge uprise in local DJ’s who have ‘spread their wings’ and flourished. As of just a little over 9 months ago, Jay Wellz, also known as ‘SoSleepyy,’ has been making some amazing headway here in the Pacific Northwest. We’ve had a chance to pick his brain, and we are thrilled to have him here in Seattle as an ‘up and coming’ local DJ at Foundation Nightclub.
“If it sounds good and makes people dance, play that s***.”
Wellz ultimately started DJing to find an hour long mix he could potentially work-out to, rather than listening to the same old mixes he had heard a million times. So what he did was dabble through the internet in search of free DJ software, much like most people starting out would, and landed on a software called “Mixxx.” Regardless of whatever virus could’ve come attached, he took the software and ran with it – quite literally. His friends listened to whatever he was mixing and producing at the time, and told him to pursue bigger and better things.
Eventually, he opened up a SoundCloud account to where he could post his mixes, and got quite the substantial turnaround with ‘plays.’ People turned into supporters of Wellz, and he continued to prove he could do much more than just make mixes for himself to workout to; he rapidly developed his fan base.
With regards to his ‘style,’ he mentioned it’s more of a “just go with it” kind of flow and that there are “no expectations.” We have seen SoSleepyy open up for major headliners such as Zomboy, Ghastly, Rain Man, and (most recently at Foundation) Lookas. With such big names, Wellz has aspirations of one day headlining his own tour, and he is clearly pushing the right buttons.
SoSleepyy recently attended and played a festival in Duvall, Washington called Somnium Music Festival. A multitude of other ‘fresh’ DJ’s were also be found headlining and DJing this multi-day event. As the winter months seem to linger on and festival season is at a close, SoSleepyy will be bulking up on his producing, and learning as much as he can through networking. We’re definitely excited to see more of this artist in the near future.
As for upcoming shows, keep your eyes peeled. The young DJ is hard at work. You can keep tabs on him through social media on Twitter and Facebook. Lastly, we will leave you all with one final thing:
