The last time we heard from Late Night Alumni, we had a chance to sit down and chat about the future of dance music with producer John Hancock. Just before taking the mainstage at Paradiso, Hancock spoke enthusiastically of the rise of deep house and the reemergence of the underground – a distinct change of pace from the seemingly predictable landscape of EDM. While the group does not claim roots in dance music, we wondered how the impact of playing the Gorge might inspire change in their future productions. With the release of their newest track, we may have an answer to that very question.
A departure from their more recent down tempo and ethereal productions, The This This is an undeniable dance floor hit. Staying true to their distinct string-based production style, a dreamy electric guitar carries the melancholic lyrics of Becky Williams’ signature voice before the song erupts into an infectious disco groove. Powered by a funky bassline and tight and energetic percussion, the track is anything but predictable yet undoubtedly capable of driving the dance floor into the late night. Punctuating the greater dance music landscape, Late Night Alumni’s disco foray is widely welcome as we wait with great anticipation for what’s to come.
