[divider]1. On Working With Kaskade[/divider]
We were excited to go in-depth with Late Night Alumni, but of course we’d be remiss to not ask about their working relationship with Kaskade. They always get asked if Ryan will show up, and yet witnessing them live demonstrates that Becky and John put on just as powerful of a performance on their own. That’s the mark of a truly great producer though: Kaskade is secure enough in the team he’s a part of, that they shine just as much as individuals as they do with him on the stage. Becky and John both came from non-EDM backgrounds, and yet their talents translated beautifully into the group.
Being a group that is so spread out due to Kaskade’s and their own schedules, Late Night Alumni have had experiences making albums together both in the same room (or warehouse) and from thousands of miles away from each other. Becky spoke fondly of all being together in an abandoned warehouse building to create Haunted and how quickly they were get that album together, yet they aren’t able to do all of them that way. Technology has come a long way in enabling both music production and collaboration, and despite having incredibly sophisticated equipment in a studio, sometimes what’s most important is to use the tools readily at hand to make progress on an album. Fortunately Late Night Alumni aren’t afraid to use what may seem like inferior methods to get work done, and so far we are incredibly happy with the end results.
We’re in the middle of a fifth album, and it’s like I’ll go with an idea, send to her, she’ll literally sing into her phone and send me an mp3 of her voice. -John
