2014 has already been a year full of new artists bursting on to the scene. Perhaps the most prominent of these names though is none other Norwegian house wizard Kygo. His remixes have been getting played out all over, with his rework of Ed Sheeran’s I See Fire skyrocketing all the way to almost 4 million plays on Soundcloud. It’s not often that we see a tastemaker like Diplo get floored by a new artist, but for this last week’s episode of Diplo & Friends, we witnessed just that.
I saw this kid and I intentionally went on his Facebook, I had to go like his page, download a couple of his remixes, and I begged him, ‘we need you to get down to Diplo and Friends.‘ This guy has got his own sound. That’s what I love on Diplo & Friends, when someone is 100% original.
The guest mix runs the gamut, from his sensual re-imagining of Marvin Gaye’s Sexual Healing to a slowed-down take on Syn Cole’s Miami 82. With a unique brand of pure chill-house happiness, you can’t help but smile from beginning to end. As it concludes, the full hour of carefully crafted remixes culminates in one, singular lesson: Remember the name ‘Kygo,’ because 2014 may very well be the year he takes our scene by storm.
