Kaytranada released his sophomore album this month on Friday, December 15. Despite a four-year absence following his debut album, 99.9%, BUBBA lives up to the anticipation. An inclination of the followup album to come, Kaytranada’s NOTHIN LIKE U/ CHANCES EP was released on RCA’s label in 2018 after a few instrumentals in between releases. Even if this served to launch the Canadian producer into a more mature phase of his musical career, nothing could have laid enough context to adequately cover how impressive this follow up is.
Featuring heavily layered instrumentals over soulful vocals, BUBBA testifies to the depth of Kaytranada as an artist. By all means, he utilizes a swath of sounds throughout, from the opening bongo pattern to bass guitar and piano. Albeit an artist spanning far more than electronic music, Kaytranada uses house, soul, and lo-fi influences throughout BUBBA.
Another impressive trait of the album is the multitude of powerhouse features. Artists like Pharrell, Estelle, and SiR illuminate the album with their respective voices and style. Uniquely, Kaytranada blends and layers these voices over his own style as opposed to modeling tracks around the features’ voices.
All in all, Kaytranada’s sophomore album has blown away our expectations. From beginning to end, BUBBA delivers something new and exciting in every track. Listen to the full album here, and let us know what you think.
