Californian producer Justin Jay has released a preview of his upcoming Instincts EP. It will be exclusively available June 9th on Beatport via Dirtybird Records. The label, which was created and is owned by tech-house giant Claude VonStroke (who will be at Paradiso 2014), is a great fit for Jay’s most recent release. Fresh off of releasing his remix of VonStroke’s Sugar & Cinnamon as a part of the Urban Animals RMXS LP, 2014 is shaping up to be a big year for Jay.
After listening to just a few of Jay’s tracks, it’s easy to see why he fits so well with the San-Francisco based Dirtybird Records. His ability to create a song that is as enjoyable on the dance floor as it is walking down the street is remarkable. From Starbucks to the Showbox, his modern take on a timeless tech-house is quality from start to finish. The three-track EP is the latest in a long line of deep house and tech house works from Jay, who has 16 tracks on his Soundcloud spanning two years.
Analysis Paralysis sets the tone for the release, as a heavy bass-line tandems with a strong percussive element that’s way too funky not to groove along to. Denial, a collab with fellow Californian PILO, is the top track on the Instincts EP. The duo couple the great classic tech-house sound with a hypnotic vocal hook repeating, ‘don’t let it be,’ ensuring the listener will unknowingly be tapping their foot, bobbing their head, or shaking their hips. Instincts closes the show with an instantly infectious sound. Its sturdy rhythmic clap turns into a bold, bulbous bass riff that glows with 808 finesse.
