Every now and then a track comes along. The original is a huge hit, it’s well-written, but something just doesn’t feel right. Take Katy Perry’s Dark Horse. The pop-trap mainstay has been #1 on Billboard three weeks running. It’s got memorable lyrics (despite the questionable rap) and a catchy hook. Even multiple plays on the radio doesn’t stop you from grooving when it comes on. Yet the lyrical content never really matches the tracks hip hop underpinnings. Katy Perry feels almost like a vocal afterthought on a Juicy J track. Jaz von D has changed all that with his latest remix.

Gone are the questionable rap skills. The genre confusion. Essentially Jaz von D has stripped away the Juicy J influence on Dark Horse. In place he has given the track what it needed all along – emotional big room impact. The vocal lives perfectly inside a big room build, and could easily be chanted at festivals. The drop is a great reminder that “big room” doesn’t have to be a synonym for “bad.” It’s engaging festival fodder sure to strike an emotional cord with listeners. Add back in the original melody and pitched down vocal, and you’ve got a recipe for remix success!
Producer Jaz von D is kicking off his new year right! This Dark Horse remix is an excellent reimagining of an already outstanding track. There’s sure to be more coming from this up-and-coming Dutch producer.
