Jack Revill, more commonly known as Jackmaster, recently took to twitter to express his thoughts on sexism in the dance music industry. He is not the first DJ to come forward about sexism in the industry, and we’re glad he’s taking time to talk about this important topic.
Anybody that feels that the industry is not equal for all sexes and people need to speak up. Keeping the conversation going is important.
1) Tonight was the 1st time that the plight and/or prejudice surrounding females in the music industry truly hit home and resonated with me

2) It is way waaay too easy to be ignorant to the fact as a male DJ in a privileged position. There is something very wrong here.

3) To hear the things that I heard said about females in the industry tonight were fucking not acceptable.
— JACKMASTER (@jackmaster) February 5, 2017
4) I apologise for my prior ignorance and silence on the subject. That stops now.

It is interesting to see a DJ take responsibility for his own ignorance (his words, not ours) on the issue. It takes a lot to not only stand up for what you think is right, but look at your own actions as well.
So now what can we do?
We can advocate for more females to come forward and become DJs. Like tyDi recently mentioned in his Facebook post, women have to believe they can be a DJ. There may be more men today, but that does not mean women can’t succeed. In a industry run by men, women have to keep going forward.
We can stand up against women DJs and producers being judged on their talent by their looks. We recently saw an article that talked about the hottest DJs, but this article barely talked about their music and talent, and rather spoke of their best physical traits.
Now more than ever people need to not only speak up against sexism, but speak through their own actions as well. It will be interesting to see what else Jackmaster does in the future about this issue, but we look forward and stand behind whatever positive action he takes.
Who else do you know standing up for people’s rights in the dance music community?
