The results of testing more than 25,000 ecstasy pills
You can learn a lot from testing one ecstasy pill. You can learn a lot more from testing 25,700 ecstasy pills. Utilizing information from pillreports.net and a variety of other sources, American Addiction Centers found some interesting, and troubling, trends in the world of ecstasy. Huh.
Most notably, the number of deaths described as “psychostimulant-related” increased nearly eight times from 1999 to 2014.
“In 1999, according to a report by the White House National Drug Control Strategy, 563 people died from psychostimulants. Up until 2001, the number of deaths had remained steady. However, since 2002, that number has risen, first peaking in 2005 with over slightly 1,500 deaths. The number soon skyrocketed, with the US reporting 4,300 psychostimulant-related deaths in 2014.” – via Digital Music News
A major factor in that rise in psychostimulant-related deaths is the grab-bag of chemicals often used to mix with MDMA, aka “pure” ecstasy. According to American Addiction Centers, nearly half of the pills tested reported back as adulterated.
Our feelings on harm reduction are well-known, and the more information we have, the better. It should be noted that, among the comments at the end of the original article, is a note regarding the collection of the results from testing more than 25,000 pills from a “Johnboy”, the person who apparently runs pillreports.net.
It’s all a bit messy, and not necessarily communicated in the best fashion. But more information on things like the contents of 25,000+ ecstasy pills from around the world is worth sharing.
It remains to be seen if the EDM world has rid itself of Soundcloud hacker Quinn, while the platform continues to lack two-way verification. LCD Soundsystem’s latest album is due out soon, and that might rub some fans the wrong way. Even if temporary break-ups in music are nothing new. The rise in psychostimulant-related deaths is relatively new, and we need all of the information we can get. Let us know what news in EDM made you go “huh?” this week, and if you’ll be changing our Soundcloud password this week. Comment below, on Facebook, or reply on Twitter!
