Although Anthony loves to travel and perform, which is key to any artist gaining traction with new fans, he also makes time to work on his own music. During the week, he is usually able to get a few days per week in the studio. Just two days before leaving for Seattle, he had finished a record (as he called it, rather than an album, as he’s an Aussie) that will be coming out on Sander Van Doorn’s label in mid-November.
He’s also been busy with a really fun remix of Lana del Rey’s Ultraviolence. He’s been working on collaborations with Sultan & Ned Shepard and others. He’s been busy, bottom line, completing both bix remixes and original work that we can expect before the end of the year.
Anthony also talked with us about what moving to LA has meant for his career and his personal life. Leaving Australia meant leaving friends, family and his core fan base, but it was also a smart move for logistical reasons.
People tend to think that LA is the place to be but geographically for me it works out really well. It’s 9 hours to Asia, a few hours to the East coast, and an easy flight to Australia. It’s a part of the world for me that’s just really convenient. It never rains, the opposite of [Seattle].
We laughed at the Seattle comment, because we get that a lot (and no surprise that someone from sunny Australia would want to stick with LA sunshine when he came stateside!). We asked about being away from friends and family, and what it’s like to connect with people from this side of the world. This sounds like the toughest part of being far away from those you love.
I miss just being able to call up my friends without having to make a Skype date to talk to them. My sister’s been trying to Skype me for the last 48 hours. She texted me when I was about to go on stage in New York, then again when I was getting on a plane.
Thinking about his sister, Anthony seemed ever so slightly bummed, but we could tell he was willing to put up with the occasional communication mishap in exchange for the lifestyle he’s living and the burgeoning career he’s working on. Watch out for Hook N Sling in the upcoming months. He’s got mad boots on the ground and will be back in the PNW in the not-too-distant future, if history is any indicator.
