Getting to Know Hydraulix: Australia’s up & Coming Bass Producer

Across the globe in Australia, Hydraulix has been helping lead the charge of the rise of trap music popularity. Make no mistake, the 28 year old from Sydney is well on his way to becoming the next big producer to come from Australia. Being the go to support DJ for every major trap producer that visits Australia, he’s slowly gaining the attention of bass fans internationally. After his latest EP ‘Pray 4 Hydro‘ dropped last month, we had the opportunity to get to chat with the man bringing the bass to the land down under.

Who are you, where are ya from…you know…first date type of questions

I’m a 28 year old producer and dj based out of Sydney, Australia. I like candle lit dinners and long walks on the beach.

What influenced you to get into music production and DJing?

Pretty much once I started going out to nightclubs and enjoying electronic music is when it first clicked and I gave it all a go.

What’s the music scene like in Australia compared to the US… Is there a difference?

There isn’t a massive difference I found…everyone seems to enjoy the music internationally. One of the only differences I did notice was Australia seems a lot more intimate, where as US is in massive venues with much bigger crowds. Much like the USA, each city in Australia is different. You go to the west coast and they froth Drum & Bass and really cutting edge stuff and then you go up north to Brisbane and they want banging trap beats; it’s a really mixed bag.

Who inspires you when you’re on the decks?

I try and feed off the crowd and do my own thing as much as possible.. But when I was first coming into it all I really looked up to people like Kissy Sell Out & Laidback Luke in terms of mixing style.

When you were putting together Pray 4 Hydro did you have a particular sound you were trying to reach

I just tried to make things as weird and wonderful as possible.. I’ve always enjoyed weirder music and I’ve always tried to translate that to what I write..

How did you get hooked up to be included on the “X-up Remixes EP” ? (Sorry…we’re bass heads too, but the remix is SICK!)

I’ve actually been talking with Excision for some time now swaping music and such.. I told him I’d love the chance to remix something and he hit me up a few months later with the remix op.. I was doing a lot of stuff with my good friend and fellow Sydney-sider PhaseOne at the time, so I asked him if he’d like to jump on it with me and the rest is history.

Plans to hit the states in 2016?…How about Pacific Northwest region (Seattle, Portland, Vancouver…)

We’re trying to organize some stuff for mid year. But dont wanna count my chickens.. Haha

Anything else on the horizon for 2016?

Lots of stuff actually.. Just had a remix drop for Slop Rock which has some good hype. I also just released a track called Ducksworth with Oski dropping through Slow Roast plus few solo singles, some collabs with some names you might know and some you may not.. Plus some shows I can’t wait to announce!

Shout outs?

Big shout out to Ministry of Sound Australia for making this release happen.

We’re looking forward to hearing more from Hydraulix this year as his future is looking quite bright. Also hoping to see him make some stops in our neck of the woods this summer. If you have a chance be sure to hit him up on Soundcloud and give his tracks a listen…worth it if you’re a trap fan. We’d like to again thank Hydraulix for taking the time to chat with us, and wish him the best for 2016.
