deadmau5
It’s the mau5-ment we’ve all been waiting for, and it couldn’t come at a better festival. Enjoying deadmau5 at The Gorge during Paradiso, or at Resolution while ringing in the New Year, sound great. But, getting goosebumps to Ghosts N’ Stuff is as FreakNight as it gets. The tech-house maverick is a dance music figurehead, whose skill is only topped by his bravado, both on-stage and off. Missing out on deadmau5’s long-awaited return, especially at FreakNight, is a mistake every Northwest-raver should try their best to avoid making.
Coupling the FreakNight set, which will take place on day one of the festival on Friday, October 30th, with a Halloween performance at HARD Day Of The Dead in Southern California, deadmau5 is finally giving-in to the Northwest masses who’ve been regularly hoping for his return in recent years. Since his last Seattle-show, deadmau5 has released a couple of albums, including his latest last summer, while (1<2). Fitting-in with his other timeless works, Zimmerman’s seventh studio album was one of the best of 2014.
The 34-year-old Toronto-native, also known as Joel Zimmerman, hasn’t visited the Emerald City for a publicized show since performing at The Paramount alongside Excision in 2011. This summer he came close, performing at FVDED In The Park over Independence Day weekend earlier this summer in Surrey, BC. Now, we’re getting deadmau5 in Tacoma (for real this time). Talk of his rumored appearances and surprise sets are commonplace among Northwest dance music Facebook group discussions, making an actual performance all-the-more enticing.
Don Diablo
Don Diablo is another of the wave of Dutch artists who continually manage to find their way onto Northwest festival lineups. The Hexagon Radio host is one of our favorite electro artists around, and we know we’re not alone. He’s recently added to his impressive catalog of remixes and original tunes, releasing a collab with fellow FreakNight 2015 artist Tiësto. The track, Chemicals, is everything you’d expect from the duo, and while we always include a few Don Diablo tunes on our playlists, the Dutchman is best enjoyed live. His sets from Tomorrowland are perfect pre-party mixes year-round, and those who were lucky enough to catch his performance at Foundation Nightclub last October can attest to the man’s skills. His hard hitting electro house sound is perfect for the festival atmosphere, and we’ll be treating ourselves to Don Diablo at FreakNight this fall.
Mat Zo
Describing Mat Zo as eclectic would only seem to scratch the surface of the London-born, Cleveland-raised artist. The 25-year-old is already two years removed from the release of his critically acclaimed debut album, Damage Control, with word of another on the way shortly. That word, and many, many others, comes from Mat Zo’s Twitter page, where he often vents his frustrations, both musically and otherwise. Also known as Matan Zohar, he’s an interesting follow, and adding personal insight to the work of artists is always interesting. Especially when that artist is Mat Zo.
Dabbling in trance, house, drum & bass, and anything else he wants, Mat Zo’s latest comes in the form of the best remix we’ve heard in a while. Taking on a tune from Porter Robinson’s Worlds, even for a guy as comfortable with Robinson’s sound as Mat Zo, is no easy task. Creating a remix that’s even better than the original? That’s something special. Whatever that is, Mat Zo has it, and he’s sharing it with us this Halloween. Don’t get tricked into missing what could end up being the best set of the entire festival, and make sure you join us at Mat Zo’s set this fall. He’s a Northwest-regular who’s performed in our corner of the continent several times in recent years, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Wiwek
The creator of ‘Jungle Terror’, Dutchman Wiwek is a set that every FreakNight attendee should make time to see. Putting his own tribal touch on the hard-hitting dirty Dutch sound we all love, Wiwek began his ascent into the EDM atmosphere with his 2014 hit On Your Mark, a collab with Gergor Salto. He’s since released two EPs, Jungle Terror and Jungle Terror Volume 2, and treated us to a couple of big-time collabs, one with two-time DJMag Top 100 #1 DJ Hardwell, and another tune with Gregor Salto this summer. Wiwek also runs his own label, Rimbu, which he utilizes to spread his unique sound. We’ll be checking out Wiwek and getting freaky to jungle terror at the Tacoma Dome this fall, and you should too.
