In the first of two arenas at FreakNight XII, Paul van Dyk headlined a group that would draw just as well in 2015 as it did in 2008. Dance music figurehead Moby and iconic duo The Crystal Method performed DJ sets, while Morgan Page, DJ Flave, and Hyperfunk set the table for one of the best festivals in FreakNight history. Since then, each of the artists has had further success, and we can’t say we’re surprised.
Paul van Dyk had already sold three million albums worldwide by the time FreakNight XII came around. It was also his second FreakNight performance, with his first coming at FreakNight 2003. He was slated to make it three at FreakNight 2014, but his performance was one of the many cancelled on the second day. Continuing to make consistent Northwest trips throughout his career, the German trance star has released two albums since his last FreakNight appearance, Evolution in 2012, and his seventh studio album, The Politics of Dancing 3, which came out in May of this year.
New York’s Moby, also known as Richard Melville Hall, has been one of the busier artists who celebrated Halloween in the Emerald City in 2008. Working with legendary artists throughout his decades long career, Moby’s doubled-down and released four studio albums of his own since FreakNight XII. Although he hasn’t returned to FreakNight, Moby has a duo of Decibel Festival performances under his belt, showing the Northwest plenty of love over the years.
A fan-favorite who’s relatively recent revival has brought joy to millions, The Crystal Method are back in the mainstream music consciousness. Their best-selling album, Vegas, was released in 1997, and went platinum in 2007. Since their most recent Northwest American festival performance (they performed at Pemberton Music Festival in 2008 and Invasion Festival in 2011), The Crystal Method have released two studio albums, with the latest coming in the form of 2014’s self-titled work. They’ve also continued their work in video games, something the American duo have done throughout their careers, which began in 1993.
No stranger to the Northwest since his FreakNight XII performance, progressive mainstay Morgan Page has returned to Seattle several times in the last few years. Shows at the Showbox and Foundation Nightclub, as well as performances at FreakNight 2012 and Resolution 2014, have kept Page fresh on our minds, and we wouldn’t want it any other way. He’s also released three albums since 2008, and was nominated for a Grammy Award in both 2009 and 2011 for Best Remixed Recording, non-classical.
