Twenty-two year old Australian producer Harley Streten, better known as Flume, recently revealed in an interview that he wants out of the EDM scene.
I try to keep out of the EDM world, I try to keep Flume far from the EDM world. Commercial EDM, the crowd is f**ked up kids basically. I prefer to play to people who actually give a s**t about the music
His also reasoned that there aren’t any EDM music festivals that cater to his sound. We think that our local What the Festival may do the trick, and hope he considers joining us there next year.
Certainly Flume isn’t the first to speak out against EDM and its culture. Tom Petty spoke out against EDM calling DJs “stupid” and festivals “drug parties.” An even larger controversy started when Diplo supported the ban of Kandi from the Mad Decent block parties because he only wants people there for the music.
While the Dance Music Northwest team has consistently been in support of the positive impact dance music has had on our lives, we want to know what you think. Do you prefer going to festivals with mixed music genres and styles like Sasquatch, or pure electronic music such as Paradiso?
