For those of us who have never joined a cheer squad, hoisting someone onto your shoulders may sound like a daunting task. Fear not, Dance Music Northwest has a comprehensive guide to help you out.
Learning how to rage safely and respectfully with your fellow festival-goers is essential for spreading positivity in our scene. Shoulder rides can be fun for a few minutes, but please be respectful of other members of the crowd.
Step 1: While facing the stage, position the rider directly in front of you.
You can face away from the stage if you really want to, but careening face-first into a stranger’s face may not be the best moment of the night.
Step 2: Bend at the knees and squat down placing your neck between the riders thighs.
Make 100% sure your shoulder rider is stable and ready to be lifted or you’re going to show everyone your best Leaning Tower of Piza impression.
Step 3: Without leaning forward drive through your heels and stand lifting with your legs.
Always lift with your legs people, not with your back. ALWAYS!
Voila! You’ve done it. Now all you have to do is rage. If you need a little guidance with that…
Step 4: Watch this dope video of shoulder rides at Capitol Hill Block Party.
