The fanny pack first became popular in the early 1980’s. The slang term “fanny” pack came from the fact that it was typically worn facing the rear, birthing the aptly-named moniker. Some say that it’s a sure sign of an out-of-place tourist, or in our more common case, a sure sign of a festivalgoer. For those who have attended a festival or two in their lifetime, they would unanimously say: you need to get a fanny pack. Festival veteran of 4 years Taylor Mozzone states:
You need a fanny pack for the essentials: phone, money, ID, chapstick, diffraction glasses, gum, a granola bar, and maybe a charge if there is room as well! They’re so much better than a purse. You can dance all you want without something swinging around.
[label style=”1″]PRO TIP:[/label] Invest in safety pins. You can clip your fanny pack to your clothes and prevent it from flopping all about even more!
Other essential things to think about adding to your rave gear:
- Ear plugs
- Sunscreen
- Gum/candy
- Sun glasses
- Cigarettes
- Glow sticks
- Lighter
- Extra water bottle caps
- Anything else you could think of that you might not want to hike back to camp to get.
Like any accessory, the fanny pack has gone in and out of fashion, but we’re of the belief that it’s coming back. Don’t believe us? Try looking around the internet and tell us nobody’s on board: The Fanny Pack Is Back! 10 Hip Pouches That Are Actually Hip, Fanny Packs Are Back, Fashion Week: Fanny Packs and Harm Pants At Marc Jacobs. Of course buying a designer fanny pack is just a little unreasonable when the likelihood of getting it getting ruined in sweaty festival crowds is roughly 99%. That being so, they can cost as little at $10 or even less if you want to get thrifty, coming in various sizes as well as prints or patterns.

Another question we’re sure you’re wondering: Aren’t fanny packs just for girls? Absolutely not! They come in camo, black, grey, or any other color you prefer. Another concertgoer of five years states:
Fanny packs are crucial and clutch! Gum, cigarettes, lighter, fractal glasses, sun glasses, cell phone, charger, glow sticks (and extra connectors), candy, chapstick, menthol stick, money, ID, extra water bottle caps (for when they throw away the cap to the bottle you purchase). Yup, this all really fits!
Fanny packs might not be for everyone, and in many cases, a small back pack could do just fine. However, you may run into the all too common issue of dancing with a bulky object swinging from on your back (and nobody wants to be the person to accidentally knock someone out with their bag). At the end of the day though, it’s about what’s comfortable and convenient for you! Let us know what you like to use to carry your essential items at festivals.
