[divider]USA vs. Australia EDM Culture[/divider]
Coming from Australia to the US was certainly an eye-opener for the SCNDL guys, as EDM in the USA has absolutely exploded. Melbourne is still the favorite place for the boys but when asked what their favorite cities to play are they had to call out the neighboring city of Sydney. We can only hope that their Seattle crowd tonight can move us a bit further up the list, as Seattle’s EDM scene is absolutely thriving. They shared a love for how passionate Sydney is about their music regardless of what it is, which sounds a lot like another city close to our hearts, no?
The boys have had a few adventures, Tom’s craziest moment is one that we wish we were present for. He took a leap into a crowd of 6,000 people off the stage on New Year’s Eve and had a huge adrenaline rush. We’re sure some of you can relate to the rush of surfing through the crowd, or perhaps rising above them all with a shoulder ride. One things that’s for sure about raving in the US, people in the crowd love reacting to the music and want to be as close to the DJ as possible. We would be thrilled if Tom decided to engage with the crowd in this way tonight at Foundation!
Australia has seen an EDM boom similar to the United States. Down under, that scene has been quietly evolving, but in its own special way.
I wouldn’t say that it’s similar to the EDM boom in America – in that it’s been a consistent rise for quite a number of years as oppose to the explosion in the states. The bounce scene has definitely exploded in Australia though very rapidly! It’s so awesome to see a sound that was only played in dingy Melbourne underground clubs a few years ago, evolve into what it is today.
But how about the fundamental differences in dance culture in America versus Australia? With the thousands of miles separating our two scenes, there’s clearly always going to be something of a disconnect, something SCNDL both recognizes and appreciates.
Actually I feel like the rave culture here in the states is very similar to the hardstyle and “plur” culture that Australia had about 6 or 7 years ago. The main difference I’d say is that in the states – they’re really excited for new music where as in Australia the thirst for new songs that no one has heard in our set isn’t as strong. It’s also so crazy to see the passion of some of the American’s at shows, it’s awesome!
