It’s that time of year again; the Grammy nominations have come out. Now is the time where you count the nominees that you know, or enjoy, or love. Or perhaps it’s the time of year where you scorn the Grammy’s for not recognizing all your favorite artists. Either way, it’s that time of year!
You may have gone straight to the Best Dance Album nominees to back your favorite contender. Indeed, this one looks tough between Sofi Tukker, Jon Hopkins, TOKiMONSTA, Justice and SOPHIE.Who do you think deserves it the most? Or perhaps, you went somewhere else.
Perhaps you darted towards the category for Best Dance Singles. Some of the hottest tracks of the year are before our eyes competing for that beautiful golden gramophone. Specifically, Fisher’s Losing It, Disclosure’s Ultimatum, Above & Beyond’s Northern Soul, Silk City & Dua Lipa’s Electricity and Virtual Self’s Ghost Voices are in the running. There can be only one!
Maybe you bounced right past those to check out the nominees for Best Remixed Recording. This one’s tricky, cause there’s some good ones. CID’S Audio, Kaskade’s Stargazing, Mura Masa’s Walking Away, Cosmic Gate’s Only Road and EDX’S Dubai Skyline Remix of How Long all made the cut and resplendent remixes.
I know what you might be thinking; this selection missed some big hitters this year. But awards like these weren’t always accessible for EDM. The category for Best Electronic/Dance Album didn’t even exist until 2005, despite the rich culture and history that dance music has had since the 90s. Imagine a time no awards for EDM at all!
Maybe the underground is better, or maybe that’s a conversation for another time. For now, lets celebrate those nominated, celebrate our genres, and enjoy the recognition.
