[authorbox authorid=”145″ title=”Heath Harshman: Knife Party’s Abandon Ship“]There are lots of things about the Knife Party’s debut album, Abandon Ship, that make it awesome. Those things are things we’re used to from duo Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen: grimey electro, funny song titles & lyrics, and high quality productions. But with Abandon Ship, it’s the things we’re not used to from Knife Party that make it the best album of the year. Whether it’s the creation of the most bearable trap tune of all time in Boss Mode or the debut of Swire’s vocals for Knife Party with Begin Again, the duo showcased that they have more up their sleeves than we ever anticipated.

There’s great tracks with the heavy Knife Party sound we know and love like Resistance, 404, and Give It Up, reminding us that Knife Party hadn’t lost their way or ‘abandoned’ their sound. There’s EDM Trend Machine, following 2013 Knife Party tune EDM Death Machine, which takes a somewhat similar tact in commenting on the current ‘EDM Machine’ while still creating a tune worth listening to. There’s even a song titled Micropenis (with the repeated vocals of ‘you have a micropenis’). What more could a die-hard fan of Knife Party ask for?
The duo answered that question with ‘how about a little bit of everything?’, which many may have initially been skeptical about. But after listening to songs like disco house anthem Superstar, Chicago house D.I.M.H., and the Middle-Eastern vibes from Red Dawn, all the doubters have been silenced. They’ve shown their ability to take on any genre they please, and return with consistent quality. Knife Party’s ability to give their fans not only what they want, but what they didn’t know that they wanted, puts Abandon Ship a notch above other great albums released this year.
