It is no secret festivals can be expensive, with the ticket, transportation, camping and food, things add up, and quickly. But this festival season you can keep your style cheap, while still staying fashion forward. Some festival fashion includes high-waisted shorts, decorative bras, flower head pieces, sunglasses and accessories. But the best thing about many of these items is that they can be made at home.
Flower Bras
Flower bras can be done well, and you don’t have to spend a lot. Just remember that you do not need to start with an expensive bra, you just need a base. Target, and Fred Meyer have reasonable prices, a bra can run between $8-15. Then you just have to pick your decorations, flowers, jewels, lace, or all. Go to your local craft store, and go crazy.
With jewels you can buy a big pack for $6, with many different sizes and colors. Once you have all your materials, all you need is a hot glue gun and scissors. You can find these at your local craft store, they are cheap and are helpful when it comes to DIY.
High Waisted Shorts
When high waisted shorts became popular, stores were raising their prices like crazy. A simple pair of high waisted shorts could easily run you $40 and above. But you can save some money by making your own. Here are some pointers to getting the best shorts for the best price.
- Check out used clothing store.
- Don’t limit yourself to the girls section. Some of the best high waisted shorts started as my moms pants, or were found in the mens section.
- Make sure that they are not too tight around the legs. It won’t translate well to shorts.
Once you have found your new or used pants, all you need is a pen, measuring tape(or a good eye) and scissors. Measure and cut with the intention of folding them, they lay a little better.
Sunglasses
Maybe you just want a little bit of festival fashion, rather than a whole head piece. What better way to express yourself than with some sunglasses. These are an easy DIY. All you need is a pair of cheap sunglasses from Fred Meyers, Target, Ross, or anywhere else you can think of, some things to decorate it with, necklaces, beads, jewels, whatever you are in the mood for and superglue.
Vests
Vests and jean jackets seem to never go out of style. They have been around for years and just keep coming back. Now you can make your jean vest or jacket a festival essential. Just buy a jacket or vest, and fabric paint. Fabric paint is cheap, easy to apply, and can be found at your local craft store. Then you can decide if you want some add-ons like patches, or jewels.
Flower Crowns
Flower crowns can be a bit more time consuming if you choose a bigger more elaborate design. But a simple flower crown can be as easy as little flowers, a head band, scissors and a hot glue gun. You can purchase a pack of three elastic head bands at your local Target, Walgreens or Fred Meyer. You just want to make sure that the head band is wide enough for the flowers you choose, and doesn’t have a weird texture.
Then you just need a little bundle of flowers, fake daisies are easy to work with. Just cut off the flowers and glue the flower to the band. It is easy, quick, and cheap, but it goes well with any festival fashion item. If you are thinking of making a more extravagant head piece, check this out.
DIY may seem intimidating, but you don’t have to take on too much. Just some simple alterations can turn a simple clothing item into a statement piece. What else festival DIYs do you swear by? Let us know in the comment below!
