[divider]The Direction Of Dance Music[/divider]
It’s always interesting to hear what artists think of where electronic dance music is heading. With technology advancing at such a rate, it’ll be interesting to see where we are in five, even ten years in this scene. Will a new genre catch fire? Will other genres just fizzle out? Designer Drugs may be the former, as they manage to keep their tempos varied and their sets fresh.
We were just going through the set list and it was just like a lot of the tracks are 128, 130 but then after that it was 132, 135, 138, 140, 142 all the way up to 150, then we got stuff down in the 70’s to 108 its just all over. Even the new tunes that were making are all over the place, I like where it’s at, kinda giving us freedom to do whatever we want.-Michael
Designer Drugs have made remarkable gains, and have quite the story to tell. Coming from the underground rave days of club Platinum in Philadelphia as late as 2004, to playing at legendary venues like the Red Rocks in 2013, the road continues on. With a name like Designer Drugs, you might expect to draw scrutiny at some point in your career. Nothing could have prepared them however for getting heat for a show that they couldn’t even attend due to a flight delay. This was never more clear than when a local Northwest outlet used them (inaccurately) as an example for why Paradiso 2013 was rife with danger.
They talked about us in the newspaper when there was an unfortunate overdose [at Paradiso]. The paper throws us under the bus and say ‘what do you expect when Designer Drugs play?’ We were like we weren’t even there!-Theo
Designer Drugs have come a long way in dance music, producing and playing tracks that keep their sets fresh. With their unique sound and love for the music, the sky is the limit. Watching them play is a treat all in its own: as one is on the table, the other eyes the crowd, reading them for which track to drop next. It was a pleasure to sit down with these guys. They were warm and welcoming, open to sharing stories. Until next time, we’ll just keep bumping their DATAMIX’s on SoundCloud. Tell us what you think of Designer Drugs below! While you’re at it, check out some other great artists to keep your eye on some other great artists…and they’re even from the Northwest!
