It’s a crazy world we live in. People are gonna be on Mars soon, cigarettes are electronic, and David Guetta, the supposedly universally despised DJ, is on top of the world yet again. This time he tops Dubset’s 25 Most Sampled Artists list, part of their Mix Transparency Report.
Dubset is a technology company that “has built the world’s largest database of registered and fingerprinted mix and remix content, MixBANK℠, that powers the industry’s first Open-API distribution and transactional exchange for derivative works.” In other words, their tech lets DJs legally release, distribute, and monetize mixed music (i.e. remixes, mashups, mixes, etc.) by identifying the original track in them and paying royalties.
Inside the report is a list of the most sampled artists, and David Guetta sits at the top. He’s followed by Calvin Harris (no duh), Ellie Goulding (super no duh), Flo Rida (really?), and Pitbull (god dammit). The report also contains other interesting information, such as the 25 Most Sampled Tracks.
It’s worth noting that there’s an extremely high chance these songs are being sampled and used for free (in the biz we call that “illegally”) and many times Guetta is likely making no money whatsoever for it. Depending on your position, you might consider that disgusting, or cosmic justice.
Northwest music producers, it’s worth taking a look at these lists. If you’re planning on sampling any of the artists or songs listed above, it might be worth considering branching out. Hell, there are tons of local Northwest artists you could be sampling instead. Why go to the same well as everyone else? Seriously…”Going Down For Real” is the 2nd most sampled song on the planet. This atrocity cannot stand.
