Connecticut-based multi-genre experimentalist Dan Barrett isn’t exactly an easy guy to get into. Having indulged in everything from shoegaze, post-punk, industrial rock, noise music, and folk music up until this point, Barrett has garnered a passionate cult following on the Internet thanks to fantastic music he’s released or contributed to under several different projects. Whether it’s the unrelenting, tortured experimental outfit Have a Nice Life, or the personal, harrowing, profoundly depressing Giles Corey, Barrett’s music is consistently rich in sound and bold in its exploration of the darker sides of human emotion. All this is only made harder to digest with the usually long-winded song lengths, the lack of traditional song structure, and his tendency towards enveloping the listener in a haunting, unfriendly atmosphere.
With all of the genre-hopping Dan’s done up until this point, it’s no surprise that he’d give electronic music a shot with his latest project, Black Wing, which is set to release its first ever album …Is Doomed on September 25th. Made during a period in Barrett’s life when he was undergoing severe health problems, Barrett describes the album as a “depressive chillwave” record, which, judging by the ominous, oddly blissful single “Luther” released to tease towards the LP, is a fair description.
The song has a slow, repetitive, lumbering beat to it, set to very shadowy, shoegaze-y synthesizers, and lo-fi multi-tracked vocals. it definitely has a Clams Casino vibe to it, but feels more emotional and abstract, with Barrett’s trademark style still present on the track. The track is very enjoyable, and has us looking forward to seeing what will be brought forth by …Is Doomed as a whole.
