Club Contour is a smaller venue in the heart of downtown Seattle. Known as a great lunch spot for Seattle’s business professionals during the day, at night the venue changes into a laid-back club with a positive atmosphere. Every month Contour hosts Bollysutra Bollywood RAVE, where guests can groove to Bollywood progressive trance.
While this event really picks up around midnight; arriving earlier allows you to grab a great spot by the bar or at the tables on the outside patio. The cocktails are decently priced ($6 for a strong well drink), and the bar well-staffed with friendly faces. The club does a great job of mixing dancing with relaxation. It’s easy to get down on the dance floor or sit at a table with friends.
One of the highlights of the event is the light show. The intricate visuals enhance the atmosphere and mix perfectly with the upbeat music. Three DJs played for the event this past weekend, starting with more traditional house and slowly evolving into classic Bollywood tunes mixed with filthy techno or heavy-hitting dubstep. Throughout the set, a North Indian instrument called a “dhol” was introduced into the mix. Similar to a bongo, the extra element complimented the dance floor and brought unique live element. It was a twist on a usual DJ set and the crowd absolutely loved it.

The crowd is another highlight of the night. Enthusiasm pulses through the dance floor while clubbers are eager to teach classic and progressive Bollywood dance moves. While dancing in the West is more about the individual expressing their own moves, Bollywood dancing is full of choreographed sequences with a lot of hand and foot work. In a perfect example of East meets West, you will most likely see several energetic dance-offs, the most entertaining one last Saturday being between a hip-hop number and a polished Bollywood routine.

The event is $5 if tickets are purchased in advance or $10 at the door. While the club gets quite full by midnight, some people get caught off guard by the mixup of Bollywood tunes and heavy dubstep. This past Saturday only the die-hard fans of Bollywood remained by the end of the night.
Bollysutra happens every second Saturday at Club Contour. If you’re looking for an extremely entertaining experience, or if you were ever curious about learning some new dance moves, Bollysutra is the event for you.
