Mexican Institute of Sound
Camilo Lara, known on stage as the Mexican Institute of Sound, never set out with the intention of taking his personal musical career seriously. At first, Lara was simply creating holiday mixes for friends — then those friends convinced him he should take his songs into the studio. At the beginning of MIS, Lara was working days as the president of a major record label while concocting his debut album at night. Thanks to the critical and commercial success of his breakthrough albums Piñata and Soy Sauce, Mexico’s accidental rockstar now tours the world performing at major festivals like Bumbershoot. Rich with electronica influences, beats, synthesizers, and playful atmospheres that evolve with the song, his music is clearly a union of the past of Mexico’s diverse cultural life with what the future of cosmopolitan Mexican music may become. Check out his work on SoundCloud.

Negativland
Negativland has been been creating records, CDs, video, fine art, books, radio, and live performance using appropriated sounds, images, objects, and text since 1980. Mixing original materials and original music with samples taken from corporately owned mass culture and the world around them, Negativland re-arranges these found bits and pieces to make them say and suggest things that they never intended to. In doing this kind of cultural archaeology and “culture jamming” (a term they coined way back in 1984), the band has pushed boundaries, sparked conversations, and opened minds. (Part of the Electronic music showcase.)
