Just beyond the gates of Ultra sat a boat docked in Bayfront Harbor waiting to take off on a four-hour trip into the coastal waterway. Forgoing the afternoon sets of UMF, 300 of Cosmic Gate’s closest ‘friends’ departed on the Musette Yacht to take part in a full-fledged trance ragefest. Cosmic Gate looked at ease, clinking glasses with their biggest fans, not worrying about whether their 1-hour set was up online or what after-party they had to jet off too.
Along with Orjan Nilsen, Cosmic Gate put together an incredible signature performance that took guests through a decade of both their classics as well as a couple of ID tracks from their forthcoming album. Cosmic Gate brought the same energy and passion that they bring to even their biggest shows. The level of intimacy that flowed through the DJs to their adoring fans only a few feet away was something that needed to be felt to properly explain. This was an environment that was distinctly different from the massive crowds, craziness and constraints of Ultra.
If the euphoria of getting up close and personal on a yacht wasn’t enough, special guest Jonathan Mendelsohn performed his hit, This Moment, with Cosmic Gate providing live support. In a surreal moment, the three performers jumped up and down singing as they urged the crowd to keep the party going well past its return to the harbor. There may be something to be said about watching the live Ultra broadcast from home, but moments likes this remind us why some things are best experienced up close and personal.
