Black Boots kicked off Havoc Fridays at Boise’s Revolution Concerthouse with a lyrical, high-energy set, playing tracks ranging from Wave Racer’s upbeat remix of Panama’s Always to their bass-heavy rework of Dillon Francis and DJ Snake’s Get Low. The crowd wasn’t hesitant to jump or sing along. When Black Boots shared the story of their inception, their unique energy became drastically more clear to us.
Mikey: “[Pedi] and I were at this weird crossroads in our lives…leaving exes, and I was looking for a place to stay. He was in a band called Afghan Raiders and I was a techno producer at the time. We didn’t produce together for two years, we just lived in separate rooms. He heard me produce and I heard him produce – two very different styles of music.”
When their first show in Boise was announced back in May, people were questioning if All Access Boise accidentally paired headliner Laidback Luke with a hardcore or indie band. We were familiar with their killer remixes, but even we was curious as to how the name “Black Boots” came about.
Pedi: “It came from a song. I’m a big fan of Nine Inch Nails and Trent Reznor and there’s a song from one of his subprojects called “How to Destroy Angels”. That’s where it started but the reason why we did it is that it’s indicative of who we are…there’s something ‘no bullshit’ about it”
Mikey: “It’s kind of militant.”
“Militant” isn’t a term you hear every day in the dance music ecosystem, and yet somehow it’s incredibly fitting, especially when considering their presence as mainstays within the chaotic Vegas music scene.
