The 2021 Ultimate Artist Guide: Beyond Wonderland at The Gorge

Though it won't be the first dance music festival at the Gorge in 2021, Beyond Wonderland's debut at the greatest venue in the Northwest marks a major moment in the genre's long-awaited return.

There are many reasons that's the case. The one we're focusing on today is the most fun: the lineup. With this year's iteration featuring 46 of the artists that were announced for last year's canceled event, Beyond Wonderland 2021 still comes with a few additions and changes.

The 2021 lineup features 66 artists in total, one less than the 2020 lineup. While artists like Adventure Club b2b Snails, Alesso, and Zomboy didn't make the jump, the festival has added Alison Wonderland, Benny Benassi, Dr. Fresch, and a mystery artist in their place.

Artists with Northwest ties increased 14% from 2020 to 2021, now at 16 total. Sir Kutz, LP Giobbi, EPROM, and Vanic join last year's group, minus Mortals and Ekali.

With that many artists, it's easy to get lost in the lineup. That's why we're bringing back our stage-by-stage artist guide. We pull together background info, music links, and more from each of the artists on the Beyond Wonderland lineup, giving you an easy way to get familiar with the acts we'll be enjoying at the Gorge this October.

Note: We categorize artists by high-level genres to help readers of all kinds understand the lineup. We apologize for the inevitable miscategorization of your favorite prog/psy/electro/hardstep artist. We're @dancemusicnw on Twitter.

Caterpillar's Garden

AC Slater

Genre: House

Creator of the Night Bass Records label, AC Slater has been highlighting the best and brightest in house music for years. Spanning everything from bass house to UK garage to grime, the Los Angeles-based artist will be joined by several artists that have released music on Night Bass. Producing and playing fantastic house music is one thing, spreading the word and ensuring the future of the genre by showcasing new and diverse talent is another. We’re glad AC Slater does both.

Bijou

Genre: House

Speaking of artists with Night Bass releases, Phoenix’s Bijou will be at Beyond Wonderland at the Gorge. He’s got a label, too, over at Do Not Duplicate Recordings. He’s kept busy throughout the last 18 months, releasing new music this year, following his 15-track album Diamond City, which came out in July of 2020. Now, Bijou will be playing those tunes at one of the best venues on the planet. If you miss Bijou at Beyond Wonderland, you’ll have a chance to catch him at Boo! at the WaMu Theater in Seattle in late-October.

Capozzi

Genre: House

Coming off of her second IN / ROTATION release, The Dark Side EP, Capozzi is one of the “must watch” artists making her way in house music. With everything from bouncy bass house to menacing tech house in her arsenal, Capozzi has all of the ingredients for a sensational set. She was also featured on the This Is Night Bass Vol 11 compilation album last year, contributing house tune No Glory to the collective work.

Cheyenne Giles

Genre: House

Signed by fellow Beyond Wonderland performer Tiësto to his Musical Freedom Records label in 2019, Cheyenne Giles’ blend of big room and bass house is perfect for festivals. The San Diego-native’s Soundcloud is a gold mine of fun, energetic remixes that we hope to hear at least a few of at the Gorge.

CID

Genre: House

Carlos Cid, aka CID, is an artist doing it all when it comes to delivering top notch house music to the world. Producing and playing a wide range of house and techno tunes, the New Yorker has performed all over the globe, while also running his own label. Night Service Only is a sub-label of Spinnin’ Records, going by the same name of the Grammy award-winning artist’s radio show.

Claptone

Genre: House

German-based Claptone will be making their way through the Northwest ahead of an upcoming album release. The new work, entitled Closer, is their fourth album and is out on November 12. Hopefully we’ll be getting a peek into what to expect from Closer a little early at Beyond Wonderland. The mysterious character delivers a distinct deep house and tech house sound that is as enchanting as the gold plague doctor mask they don, and is another easy nominee for any “can’t miss set” list.

Devault

Genre: Other

Fitting well in the “Other” category with his mid-tempo electronica, Devault approaches music in a fan-friendly way that flaunts his ability and willingness to expand his boundaries. He’s paired past works like the JADE EP with accompanying videos and short-films, collaborated with The Bloody Beetroots, and been featured on Diplo & Friends. We’re not sure what’s next, but getting a glimpse at the Gorge this fall is one of the great treats on the Beyond Wonderland lineup.

Dr. Fresch

Genre: House

California’s Tony Fresch, better known as Dr. Fresch, is making sure fans in the PNW get a couple of chances to catch him live this year. In addition to Beyond Wonderland at The Gorge, Dr. Fresch is also performing at Boo! at the WaMu Theater in Seattle in late-October. And, if you’re willing to travel, he’ll be at Lost Lands 2021 as well. The former Insomniac Discovery Project Contest winner has become a fan-favorite over the years, and we’ll take as many Dr. Fresch shows in the Northwest as we can get. He’s no stranger to the Gorge, having performed at Paradiso 2015.

Felix Cartal

Genre: MainStage/Electro

Performing throughout the PNW on a regular basis, including Paradiso 2013, Felix Cartal is the definition of a Northwest favorite. The DJ/producer from Vancouver has released three studio albums, with the first coming a decade ago. Suffice it to say his style of electronica has more than caught on, and it’s easy to see why. His high-level productions are consitently top notch, and getting to enjoy those productions live is always a good time.

Green Velvet

Genre: House

Referring to artists as “Legends” probably happens more often than it should, but it’s more than apt when referring to Chicago’s Green Velvet. Releasing his debut EP 30 years ago, the artist also known as Curtis Alan Jones is intertwined with the history of techno and house music. He’s released dozens of albums and EPs as both Green Velvet and his original moniker Cajmere, showcasing an ability to not only adjust with the times, but to create new trends as well. If you haven’t had a chance to catch Green Velvet yet, don’t miss your chance at Beyond Wonderland at the Gorge.

HHerb

Genre: MainStage/Electro

Seattle-based vocalist, producer, and DJ Hherb is the kind of multi-talented artist that dance music was made for. Featuring original lyrics and vocals on their productions, Hherb will be showcasing their skills at one of the most famous venues on the planet this fall. Hherb is a regular a local clubs like Trinity, Q, Kremwerk, and more, and getting to see them on the grandest stage in the Northwest is a treat for everyone involved.

John Summit

Genre: House

While 2020 was a tough year for everyone, some artists like John Summit managed to make the most of it. The Chicago-based producer/DJ had a song, Deep End, gain support from the likes of Pete Tong, Annie Mac, and more, while dominating the Beatport charts throughout the summer. Now that events and festivals are back, it’s time for John Summit to reach the heights he’s been waiting for since exploding onto the scene last year. Part of that process: returning to the Northwest for a debut set at the Gorge.

Kendoll

Genre: House

We’ve been big fans of Kendoll for a long time. The Seattle-native who’s currently based out of Los Angeles has been on a steady rise since the outset of her career, and we couldn’t be happier watching her successes continue to compound. Releasing tunes on labels like Night Bass Records, Insomniac Records, Psycho Disco, and more, her brand of bass house is gaining notoriety. Performing at festivals in the past like Nocturnal Wonderland, EDC Las Vegas, and more over the years, we can’t wait to see what she has in store for the Gorge at Beyond Wonderland this summer.

LP Giobbi

Genre: House

Born in Oregon, LP Giobbi is gaining the attention of music fans and industry professionals around the world. Dubbed a rising star by various publications, the multi-talented artist is using her platform and talents to highlight the lack of representation and equality in dance music. Not all artists are willing to take vocal stances on potentially divisive topics, especially when they’re less established than their less vocal counterparts. That doesn’t concern the classically trained LP Giobbi, who is more than established in varoius aspects of the dance music industry, from directing to running a record label and more. Plus, she had a song, Jungle Queen, featured in FIFA 21, which is really cool.

Malaa

Genre: House

Malaa returns to the Gorge at Beyond Wonderland following his b2b “No Redemption” set with Tchami at Paradiso 2018. No stranger to the Northwest, Malaa always seems to make time for our region when on tour, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Once one of the “artists to watch”, Malaa has now fully entrenched himself in the global house music scene.

Nostalgix

Genre: House

Nostalgix, aka Negar Hamidi, is another Northwest artist making a name for herself on the Night Bass label. She released the Act Out EP via AC Slater’s imprint in late-2020, which followed the three track OG Sins EP on the same label. A North American tour was set to take place last year as well. While it’s been a long wait, it’s better late than never for her return to the Gorge. She opened up the main stage on day one of Paradiso 2017.

Petey Clicks

Genre: House

Los Angeles-based Petey Clicks joins the crew of Night Bass Records regulars on the Beyond Wonderland at the Gorge lineup. After years in collaborations and performing under various aliases, Petey Clicks has now established himself and is among the most consistent producers on the label. He’s toured with the Night Bass crew plenty of times in the past, including their most recent PNW visit at Resolution 2020.

Regard

Genre: House

Hailing from Kosovo, Regard emerged onto the broader deep house scene in the summer of 2019. Following the release of Ride It, which has amassed more than 15 million plays on SoundCloud and was a huge hit across the globe, Regard was featured on the historic BBC program Top of the Pops for their 2019 New Year’s Eve special. Now, he makes his way to one of our favorite venues for Beyond Wonderland at the Gorge.

Sidepiece

Genre: House

From the combined powers of Party Favor (aka Dylan Ragland) and Nitti Gritti (aka Ricky Mears), Sidepiece is exactly that for the two established dance music artists. While a Sidepiece may be a side-project, it produced a 2020 Grammy nomination for “Best Dance Recording” with On My Mind, a collaboration with Diplo. Not bad for a couple of guys just beginning to make their way and find their sound in house music.

Syence

Genre: MainStage/Electro

Los Angeles-based duo Zach and Brayden are spreading their self-described bass pop sound to the Gorge this fall. We’ve shared one of their mixes below, but their SoundCloud is full of fun mixes, many of which are from their “Syence Lab” mix series. There are plenty of remixes and original tunes as well, like thier most recent release, a little bit bored, which has tallied nearly 80,000 plays in the less than six months that it’s been out.

VANZ

Genre: Bass

While he grew up on the east coast, VANZ, aka Tommy Vanisavath, is now making waves in the Northwest dance music scene. Playing everything from G-house and tech house to all kinds of bass, the versatile DJ is showcasing his skills at local venues like The Underground and Vue. VANZ has also performed at major PNW festivals, like Resolution 2020 and Bass Canyon 2021.

Wax Motif

Genre: House

Aussie Wax Motif, also known as Danny Chien, has displayed his diverse background with releases on genre-bending imprints such as Dim Mak, Mad Decent, Fools Gold, and more. Curator of House of Wax Radio, and a G-House fan-favorite, Wax Motif returns to the Gorge after performing at Paradiso 2017.
