New York Trap Giant Baauer said via Facebook he would start giving away free music at his shows by throwing USB flashdrives at the audience. Last night, Baauer had a show in Tuscon, AZ, and some of his newest unreleased material was made available to audience members. The content found inside the flashdrives has now been uploaded to the internet and is available for streaming and download.
It seems that every USB flashdrive Baauer distributed contained 4 tracks. The tracks themselves are more like rough drafts than new singles. 3 of the 4 songs on the flashdrive either meet or are under the two minute mark. However, the aforementioned 3 tracks are some of the most zealous trap bangers I’ve heard all year, and the final track (XTC) shows Baauer experimenting with more progressive house beats. The shortest track, BADDST2, goes the hardest. Feeling similar to TNGHTs big, unabashed, trap-hop, sports arena, jock-jams, the flashdrives remaining MP3s are unpolished, skeletal versions of bigger ideas. Fans and observers might hear finished versions of 1Snap and RASBERRY at a later date, but this small display of new material is enough further perpetuate Baauer’s staying power as a mainstage DJ act.
Overall: It’s good that Baauer is doing this after Harlem Shake went as viral as it did. This new material serves as a reminder that this trap-hop beatmaker knows how to make refreshing, fun, music; that feels colossal. It’s also a great way to release previews of unfinished tracks. Baauer has tweeted that he will continue releasing new material through USBs and he should! His skills are are only getting stronger. These songs feel more honed and focused than Baauer’s previous work, but still contain a boastful personality. Download the songs here.
